In this context, ‘air transport’ is taken to refer to public transport (primarily by airlines) using fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters. In the main, the emphasis here is on passenger transport, though it needs to be noted that the freight role of aviation is important, albeit considerably smaller in revenue terms than the passenger role (see Chapter 23). Much of this task is handled by medium to large passenger jet aircraft. Business jets have a role also.
