Abstract

The story of vehicle crime in the second half of the twentieth century and first decade-and-a-half of the twenty-first century has been one of boom and bust. What at one time seemed like an inexorable rise, in which annual increases in crime became the norm, gave way to rapid declines, which, at the time of writing, had yet to abate. This chapter describes both the scale and nature of the problem, its evolution, and the different approaches taken to its prevention. It aims to identify the particular prevention measures that may have contributed to the declines in vehicle crime in recent years.
