Abstract

Neil Verma is Assistant Professor of Sound Studies in Radio/Television/Film at Northwestern University. He is author of Theater of the Mind: Imagination, Aesthetics, and American Radio Drama (University of Chicago Press, 2012), winner of the Best First Book Award from the Society for Cinema and Media Studies. He is co-editor of Anatomy of Sound: Norman Corwin and Media Authorship (University of California Press, 2016), winner of the Kraszna-Krausz Best Moving Image Book Award. Verma has published articles in such journals as Critical Quarterly, The Journal of American Studies, The Journal of Sonic Studies, RadioDoc Review and The Velvet Light Trap and contributed chapters to several edited volumes. He is Co-Network Director for the Radio Preservation Task Force at the Library of Congress, and founder of the Great Lakes Association for Sound Studies (GLASS). Recently, Verma won a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to develop digital tools for analysis of archival voice recordings. He holds a PhD in History of Culture from the University of Chicago, where he also won a Harper-Schmidt Postdoctoral Fellowship, serving in the Society of Fellows in the Liberal Arts from 2010–14.
