Abstract

A number of contributors have focused on the granular details of transnational film practices in the region. In Chapter 10, Gerard Dapena looks at the dynamics of genre films as inherently cross-border experiences. Luisela Alvary (Chapter 17) and Tamara L. Falicov (Chapter 18) review how the financing and cultural promotion of films seek to redefine local audiences in relation to international market and cultural forces. In a similar vein, Josetxo Cerdán and and Miguel Fernández Labayen (Chapter 23) view the cinema’s rivalry with television in terms of the latter’s success in forging national identities while negotiating broader Latin American cultural production in the global marketplace.
