Abstract

While I was training in psychiatry and internal medicine, it became clear to me (VH) that depression affected many aspects of medical health, well-being, and functionality and that problems in these arenas contributed to depression. Dr. Clayton, my esteemed teacher, introduced me to sexual dysfunction (SD) among psychiatric patients, and together we characterized how SD was evaluated and treated in primary care patients. After years of providing clinical psychiatric and primary care, I see that sexual function can be a marker for other aspects of mental and physical health and that current SD can indicate current and future medical problems.
