Abstract

This chapter discusses disability representation in Indian news media drawing on an analysis of news narratives on disability while also exploring inclusion of persons with disabilities in media production through an interrogation of existing policies and practices. A frame analysis combined with a Marxian approach revealed that persons with disabilities are (re)presented as having use value that translates as exchange value in the market, suggesting a political economy reading of disability. In-depth interviews with Indian media professionals, consumers and disability advocates yielded insights into how these groups understand inclusion, with views ranging from alignment with social responsibility and charity, to the language of rights and fairness.
