Abstract

Journalism studies, and for that matter any research field, works on the premise of certain shared ontological assumptions of the basic components and categories of the field and their relationships. In short, there is a set of things that ‘exists for a discipline’ and, subsequently, others that do not exist for a discipline (Turk, 2006: 187). Occasionally, however, these assumptions are altered and the old paradigm is challenged. To illustrate this, we can look at gatekeeping theory which today is established within the field although this has not always been the case.
