In this chapter we address one of the key questions in contemporary journalism and communication studies: how can we detect macroscopic trends in the vast troves of media data made available by digital technology? To do so, we ask: how well can computational methods apply content, framing, or discourse analysis to huge samples? This work is part of the emerging field of computational social sciences (Lazer et al., 2009), and our approach combines expertise in computer science with quantitative and qualitative approaches in journalism and media studies.
