In this chapter we examine the European City model and its potential to produce more sustainable urban areas/cities. However, we also show the problematic relationship between social justice and economic growth that is inherent to the European City model. By drawing on the example of sustainable urban development in Freiburg, Germany, internationally recognized as a successful implementation of the European City model, we show that in practice social justice is subjugated to economic growth. It is the aim of this chapter to critically question urban models in general and the European City model in particular.
