Italy is one of the major economies of Europe. In 2012 its GDP equalled 1,565 billion euros, the fourth in Europe after Germany, France and the United Kingdom. In Europe, its industrial sector (mining, manufacturing, construction and energy) is second only to that of Germany for value added (as is shown in Figure 23.1) and for employment. Italy is the fifth industrial country in the world, producing around 6 per cent of the OECD industrial output in 2011 (as is shown in Figure 23.2). Although the gap between it and the fourth, Germany, has widened in recent years, Italy has slightly increased its advantage in relation to France and the United Kingdom.
