Abstract

In recent years social tourism has gained much attention from policy makers, stakeholder organisations, the European Commission (EC) and researchers within the tourism social science academy. Against the backdrop of the global economic crisis following 2007 and its enduring effects on the global economy, the discourse around social tourism emanating from a range of stakeholders, including academicians, policy makers and practitioners, has developed into a renewed understanding of social tourism’s role in modern society.
