Abstract

In this final chapter, our aim is to provide a useful guide to researchers entering (or re-entering) the field of performance management and control (PMC). The approach taken was to request contributing authors and members of the Management Control Association (MCA) 1 to share some words of wisdom based on their experience as scholars in the field and to weave these in with our own observations and recommendations. The chapter is divided into two main sections. First, we summarise key developments in the field of PMC, identifying what we and our fellow authors consider as the seminal works or milestones in PMC research. The references for this section are collected together in Appendix 28.2 and presented in chronological order to follow the historical account.
