Abstract

While the prevalent use of digital technologies among larger populations can be seen around the world, its sociopolitical effects seem to be quite different depending on the historical-cultural contexts in which new technologies are introduced. Paying attention to the distinctive characters discerned in tomodachi (friends) relationship of Japanese youth, this chapter interrogates how and in what ways SNS functions as a tool for peer surveillance in their coordination of harmonious relationships with friends.
