It has long been an article of faith among architects that the design of buildings has a profound influence on the behavior of its inhabitants. But there has been at best only anecdotal evidence to support this claim. The spread of sensing technologies and data analytic techniques may hold promise for a more empirical approach. This chapter outlines important foundational issues for this field and presents contemporary examples of new techniques are being applied to architectural settings. It includes case studies of processes being developed by WeWork and AECOM, as well as computer vision-based tools being developed by the authors.
