The United Nations defines a disaster as a “serious disruption to the functioning of a community or a society” (UNISDR 2015). Disasters are events that cause widespread and negative human, material, economic, or environmental issues. Such negative impacts exceed the ability of the affected community or society to cope effectively using its own resources i.e., external help is required by the community/society to respond and recover from the disaster.
