Abstract

The laptop orchestra is an intersection of cutting-edge technology and conventional musical contexts, exploring new possibilities for large-scale computer-mediated musical performance. Simultaneously, the laptop orchestra suggests unique artistic and pedagogical opportunities to investigate instrument design, computer programming, music composition, and live performance as a single context. This chapter examines the nature and development of the laptop orchestra, its artistic process and its distinctively integrated laboratory and classroom combination, drawing from experiences of the Princeton Laptop Orchestra (PLOrk) and Stanford Laptop Orchestra (SLOrk).
