Since its inception, the research on grammar development in L2 Chinese has grown into one of the most prolific areas in Chinese second language acquisition. Following background information on the historical perspectives of L2 Chinese grammar research, this chapter provides a comprehensive summary of research on ten domains of L2 Chinese grammar, ranging from adverbs, prepositions, nominal structures, verbal complements, temporal devices and aspect markers, ba- and bei-constructions, wh-expressions, relative clauses, cohesive devices, to information structure. An extensive section of the chapter is then devoted to a critical review of eight research approaches that have been widely adopted in L2 Chinese grammar studies or have shown great promise for application to L2 Chinese grammar studies. Apart from the pedagogical implications drawn on the L2 Chinese grammar research, this chapter ends with an insight into prospective research endeavors in this area to achieve a wider range of theoretical frameworks, a more rigorous methodology of studies, and a more robust use of analytical techniques.
