Abstract

In that the author emphasizes the close connection between resilience and adaptability throughout this chapter, what follows is how he defines adaptability, which will hopefully facilitate a better understanding of the relationship between them:

Adaptability means being aware of the immediate environment as well as realistically and flexibly attempting to understand and address challenges when they arise. This, in turn, facilitates the ability to manage and adapt to an ever-changing human existence. One’s level of adaptability moreover, determines how successful one will be in coping with change. People who have a high level of adaptability are generally effective in understanding problematic situations as well as finding suitable solutions to them, as well as constructive ways of dealing with setbacks and resiliently recovering from them.
