This chapter is devoted to the construction of a theoretical framework that does justice to East Asian and Asian realities instead of simply applying Western theories. The Asian region will be divided into “Patriarchal Asia” and “Bilateral Asia” and the impact of Western modernity on gender construction in Asian modernities is discussed in relations to an ideological mechanism that has been termed “self-Orientalism”. The multiple paths to modernity are discussed, employing the concepts such as “compressed modernity” and “semi-compressed modernity”, housewifisation and de-housewifisation, as well as “socialist modernity”. The final section delineates the important roles policies play.
