This case centered on Google’s reproduction and display of snippets from tens of millions of books through its Library Project and Google Books project. Google acquired these books through major libraries (which had submitted them to Google for the purpose of making digital copies) but never received permission from the individual authors and rights holders. These rights holders brought a class copyright infringement action against Google, to which Google responded by arguing that its copying and public display constituted fair use.
