Abstract

The sound system of Burmese has many interesting features, including a number of uncommon sounds, such as voiceless nasals (hŋ, hm, etc.), an aspirated sibilant (s^h ), and three tones. The aim of this chapter is to systematically describe the sound system and explain the use of the IPA-based transcription method applied in this grammar. It will also give a detailed account of Burmese pronunciation.
