The sound system of Burmese has many interesting features, including a number of uncommon sounds, such as voiceless nasals (hŋ, hm, etc.), an aspirated sibilant (sh ), and three tones. The aim of this chapter is to systematically describe the sound system and explain the use of the IPA-based transcription method applied in this grammar. It will also give a detailed account of Burmese pronunciation.
