Abstract

John Polidori’s “The Vampyre” (1819) presents us with one of the first vampires in British fiction. In this tale, readers face a supernatural villain that is as economic as it is monstrous. Lord Ruthven represents not only a member of the wealthy elite who preys upon those in lower socioeconomic positions, but also what becomes of unregulated self-interest in an economic system that promotes consumption for consumption’s sake.
