One thing is perfectly clear with respect to disability: for a long time there has been an empty seat at the human rights table. Compared to other minority groups, and with respect to related issues of inequality, disability has received very little attention from sociologists and human rights activists. What about disability—compared to other human rights issues, such as sex and gender, labor and labor movements, and the sociology of emotion—leads us so often to disregard it as an issue worthy of our attention? Disability as a human rights issue is simply ignored.
