Abstract

As the fields of forensic psychology and forensic psychiatry have evolved, the basic tenets of forensic report writing have become well-established. Basic components include: (1) Articulate the psycholegal referral question(s), (2) identify sources of information, (3) present data first, followed by opinions, (4) include only relevant information in the report, (5) avoid (or explain) jargon, (6) link conclusions and opinions to the data underlying them, (7) discuss alternative hypotheses, and explain why your conclusions offer a better explanation than the alternatives you considered.
