Abstract

In the last ten years there has been renewed interest in the Copts of Egypt. Unlike earlier generations of scholars who were largely concerned with religious practice 1 and persecution, 2 more recent authors have examined the socio-political climate of the twentieth century with the aim to better understand contemporary issues in Egypt. This has included the role of the Egyptian state 3 and the tensions between various Coptic “communities”. 4
