Abstract

The sudden breakdown of the Visigothic kingdom after its defeat by the Muslim armies has been understood as the result of a deep crisis during the seventh century. But a more accurate analysis of the evidence shows that it was a strong kingdom in the post-Roman context. The society was complex and it could not be defined as slave-based. Its end was the result of a cyclical political crisis with the presence of new actors: the Muslims.
