Abstract

In Greek mythology, Amazons were fierce warrior women—“the equals of men”—dwelling in barbarian lands north and east of the Mediterranean world. The mythic heroes Heracles, Theseus, and Achilles defeated Amazon queens of the Black Sea region and the classical Athenians celebrated their legendary victory over an invading Amazon army; Greeks venerated numerous tombs and landmarks associated with the women warriors. 1
