According to Bruzzi, currently the father in film studies is ‘still “a bit like air” – omnipresent but rarely talked about’ (2005, p. xi). As a key masculine archetype, the father is surely one of the most ubiquitous, yet rarely discussed or analysed, masculine presences within film studies. The centre point and launching place for 1,000 filmic narratives, yet at the same time one of the most ignored, the father has largely escaped critical attention until relatively recently.
