Abstract

There are books and TV and radio and the web, but newspapers are the beating heart of sports journalism. In the period immediately before the digital world took hold, sport was more and more important and took an increasing percentage of newspaper space. Between 1974 and 2004, it rose in The Times from 11 to 21 per cent, in The Guardian from 11 to 17 and in the Daily Telegraph from 18 to 30.
