Abstract

Prediction remains a tricky business – who could have foreseen the rise of Twitter? But as sports journalism looks forward into a world which increasingly demands multi-media skills, in what other ways might it change? One would be diversification away from its enduring white male demographic, a shift which could also serve to minimise institutional sexism and racism and reflect more faithfully the experience of sports fans who are BAME, female or LGBT. Another challenge will be maintaining the relevance of professional journalism in the face of widespread distrust of the trade and competition from free content provided by enthusiastic amateurs.
