Abstract

Last of the tributes is a reminder that the most important people in sports journalism are not always those who get their names in the paper. John Samuel, sports editor of The Guardian from 1968 to 1986, is remembered by Matthew Engel, among the most significant of his recruits amid the transformation of a department “that was lagging behind the paper into one producing distinctive and envied sports pages”. This was done with an acute eye for talent, his style of management much less concerned with detail than recruiting writers with “broad sympathies and ready wit” and “letting them get on with it”.
