Abstract

David Lacey and Patrick Barclay are united by their love of football and the quality of their journalism. Both carved their global reputations at The Guardian. Both have won reporter of the year awards. Both ridicule the theory, expressed by that now-disgraced French maestro Michel Platini, that a perfect game would end 0-0. Both regard themselves as guardians of the game, as critics before reporters: Lacey brought humour to his trade; more of a purist, Barclay injected a reformer's zeal. In 2011, they met for lunch at Langan's Brasserie, long a favourite haunt of eminent football folk.
