For far too long, the words “sport” and “race” never occupied the same sentence in a newspaper. Sport, after all, occupied a parallel universe, untouched by such intrusions. Because they dominated the press, it was inevitable that attention to racial inequities should be drawn primarily by white reporters. This chapter therefore focuses on those who campaigned in less enlightened times. Through the prism of civil rights in the United States, apartheid (and after) in South Africa and socio-economic advances in India, it focuses on sportswriters who have made a difference to a race other than their own.
