Abstract

This chapter is a brief survey of US policy in Latin America. Its purpose is to provide the reader with sufficient information to visualize and analyze the policy choices that were available to diplomatic, political, economic and military implementers in each of the periods of US-Latin American relations to date. Consequently, for each historical period, a spectrum of possible conclusions is presented. The author opines that the topic at hand has been subjected to a more ideological form of interpretation than is commonly seen in writing about US policy toward other world regions. Therefore, an effort has been made to delineate these varied orientations and biases, and let the reader do the choosing and the judging.
