Abstract

In studying the role of music in the tightly woven world of Greek culture and society, Ariadne’s clue is as relevant today as it was millennia ago. Travellers to the musical labyrinth discover new dimensions of time and space, forever shaped and censored by the musical Minotaur. In this world of underground passages and dead-ends, a clear identification of ‘the problem’ is demanded of the intrepid researcher. The threads of theory and method that bind the research project must be tightly woven together, for it is crucial that such a guide holds firm for the journey in, as well as the journey out of, the musical labyrinth.
