Abstract

Poland belongs to a group of nations that, after gaining independence following the First World War (1918), were constantly undergoing rapid changes and shocks due to internal and external causes. Integration of the country, previously divided between three empires (Austro-Hungarian, German and Russian), was easier in political than it was in economic and social terms. Differences in development between regions belonging to those three empires are still visible today.
