The purpose of this collection is to provide an authoritative, state-of-the-art review of current research in the multidisciplinary and global field of border studies. An array of highly respected and experienced scholars in border studies has been gathered to write chapters on their particular areas of interest to furnish a comprehensive reference for the field. The volume is intended to be global in scope both as to the range of its entries and the affiliation of its contributors. The contributors have been chosen on the basis of their ongoing significant publications as well as their recognized international standing; we have also attempted to achieve a gender-balanced selection of contributors. In addition to the most eminent and well-known experts on border issues, promising younger scholars who have already distinguished themselves through their publications have been given a platform to offer readers recent perspectives and fresh interpretations of the field. In addition to the most recent perspectives on well-known cases and border disputes, some lesser-known examples that either offer interesting solutions or that are potential global conflicts are included. The Companion is intended to become an important complementary textbook for students and scholars in related disciplines, for example political geography, international relations, political science, environmental studies, conflict studies, and history across the world. Additionally, planners and practitioners, especially regional planners and experts who are establishing and institutionalizing cross-border contacts and cooperation, should also be able to benefit from the concepts and case studies presented here.
