Abstract

Indicators may be derived from objective data, but the selection of data to be used and the methods to process them into indices are always subjective, based on what authors consider relevant information. This in turn is influenced by the world view they hold. The author here distinguishes archetypical modificationists and transformationists as two opposed camps. Their ontologies, epistemologies, anthropologies and axiologies differ, and so do their indicator choices. This chapter explains these different approaches and how they influence the indicator selection, based on examples from both camps.
