Abstract

This chapter discusses issues and challenges relating to social work practice with children in Botswana, an area where social workers play a pivotal role within a welfare system inherited from the British. It begins by examining the evolution of social work in Botswana before considering the socioeconomic and political reality within which child welfare work is conducted. It then outlines the policies and services surrounding child welfare practice before illustrating the role of social workers within a prominent nongovernment organisation (NGO). It ends with some suggestions relating to the ongoing challenge of relevance and appropriateness for social workers within child welfare services.
