Abstract

Ethnic diversity has long been a newsroom priority, but its success has been thwarted by international shifts in media business models. Improved numbers of ethnic diverse media managers is helpful, but newsroom structure must transform for real change to occur. Participatory journalism is creating opportunities to address incognizant racism, particularly as newsrooms include more commentary. Racism in crime and sports coverage needs to be addressed systematically in Western nations. Perpetuating stereotypes in news can lead to increased violence locally and encourage international policy harmful to immigrants.
