Abstract

Reverence for the environment has been integral to the Islamic tradition beginning with the Qur’an and the Hadith (sayings and deeds of the Prophet Muhammad). The development of an active “environmentalist” tradition within Islam was necessitated further by the fact that water, vegetation, and fertile lands have always been scarce resources in Arabia. Hence, the Islamic tradition offers much that is relevant to today’s world concerned with maintaining a sustainable global environment.
