Abstract

This chapter explores the links between water diplomacy and peacebuilding. It describes competing interests around water and looks at how political power influences cooperation. It then highlights the gap between how water is treated in the different policy domains of development and foreign affairs and argues that these domains need to be considered simultaneously for water cooperation to lead to sustainable development and peacebuilding. It concludes that well-designed water diplomacy approaches would serve to connect the two policy domains and could therefore contribute to more effective and sustainable peacebuilding.
