Abstract

The relatively recent rise of city living and associated human activity have led to huge impacts on the health and wellbeing of both people and planet. International policy now recognizes the importance of the local level: the UN Sustainable Development Goals, in particular SDG11, ‘Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable’, can be seen as an overarching framework for policy to improve the environment and health in cities. This chapter demonstrates how urban planning and urban design are rising to become key tools to embed a strong health dimension in the local delivery of international policies on environment and health. However, more must be done to help unlock their full potential by giving a voice to the local level in international policy-making.
