Abstract

This chapter discusses the health challenges faced by refugees in a variety of cities in Europe. It shows how refugees’ health and well-being are shaped by the broader sociopolitical and legal context, which includes the conditions and experiences of refugees during their preflight, flight, and resettlement. The type of care that refugees receive in host cities depends on their legal status as well as the willingness of the government and the civic society to facilitate their integration into their host country. The chapter examines in detail the response to health needs of refugees in the Serbian capital Belgrade, which is a transit location place for refugees. The chapter concludes by offering some policy recommendations on how to better address refugees’ health care needs during and after their journey.
