Abstract

Are individuals entitled to have access to at least a minimally decent income? If so, on what terms should this minimum income be available? Should receipt of the income be conditional on work or seeking employment? This chapter indicates how these questions can be addressed within the framework of a democratic ethics grounded in mutual respect between free and equal people. It explains how a democratic ethics supports the right of access to a minimally decent income. It explains the reasons, within democratic ethics, for and against making a minimally decent income conditional on work.
