Abstract

This chapter discusses Cuba’s pursuit of sport for development as a calculated project of international solidarity, strategic positioning, and national self-fulfillment. Whereas elite sport achievement is often thought of as a product of development, Cuba’s approach has been to use sport as a means to achieving social development. For Cuba, sport is grounded in the concept of ‘solidarity’, as opposed to frameworks of philanthropy, charity, and neoliberalism that have tended to be dominant in sport for development. This chapter discusses the moral, and practical, reasons as to why Cuba approaches sport in such a way.
