Abstract

This paper sets out the main features of the SDP sector with a focus on its organizational aspects. The discussion has five main parts. I begin by setting out the scope and status of the SDP sector, exploring for example its links to the wider fields of development and sport. Second, I outline a four-fold model of the sector which links specific SDP stakeholders to types of SDP policy and practice. Third, I turn to elaborate on this by examining, for example, the role of the United Nations within the sector and the potential inclusion of further stakeholders within the model. Fourth, I examine how relations between different organizations within the SDP sector are marked by various kinds of fragmentation, competition and partnership. Finally, I explore how social justice groups, which take a transformational approach to development, may be more actively engaged within the SDP sector. I conclude by pointing to potential future changes that may occur within the SDP sector.
