I admit it—I’m a nerd. I indulge in a hobby known as DXing, the reception of long-distance radio broadcasts (“DX” is the radiotelegraph abbreviation for distance). In effect, I collect AM radio stations. This is a hobby that originated with the dawn of radio broadcasting nearly 100 years ago, and has a close relationship with the community of licensed amateur radio operators. 1
