Situational analysis is a term popularized by Karl Popper. It is sometimes also referred to as situational logic, logic of situations, or the logic of the situation. Situational analysis and its synonyms have been used for over a century in a variety of fields from military strategy, to psychology, to sociology—sometimes in senses closely related to Popper’s usage (see e.g. Mannheim 1936 [1997], 95), sometimes in quite different senses. Our concern here is principally with situational analysis as it has derived from Popper.
