Abstract

This chapter provides a survey of distance education in Latin American and Caribbean countries. The authors discuss the opportunities of distance education systems, along with some of the challenges that are presented by the political, social, and economic landscapes. They stress that having a clear vision of the meaning of the DE offerings can help to alleviate challenges to increase online provision of higher education to the peoples of Latin America, the Caribbean region, and beyond.
